(Held on 2nd & 4th Sat.’s of each month.) | Sun., Sept. 7, 2008 | Message: Pastor Mark Cornerstone's Values ~ Part 4: Loving God Last week we discussed the core value of LOVE -- and that God is Love. (I Jn. 4:18, 9, 16-17) Love is his character, his nature, his premise, and his promise. All he does flows from love. We were created out of his love and we are sustained by his love. We are the most valued of all his creation – because of love. So, what is our response to His incredible love? How do we love Him back? This week we examined what the Bible says about how we show our love for God. (Click here to read more in the Prayer Guide.) (Click here to see the Bulletin for this week.)

On Sat., Sept. 6th, Women 2 Women gathered to learn about the Ministry of Encouragement. The Theme Scripture was 1 Thess. 5:11 - "Therefore, encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing." Gwen Hampton spoke about 2 ministries of encouragement that she is involved in: Prison Fellowship Ministry and Cornerstone's Card Ministry. The ladiese then made cards to encourage people they know. Note: At the May meeting, Project “Esther” was introduced to the ladies. This project is about empowering and giving opportunities for the women to speak, teach and lead others in areas that they feel gifted in. So each of the ladies wrote down their name and 3 things they could teach others. All the names were put in a basket and from now on, every other month a name will be drawn and that person will pick what they would like to teach to the other ladies at a W2W Event. | | Fri., Aug. 29 - Mon. Sept. 1, 2008 | 'Connecting & Bonding' Elders Wives Conference Anne Stapleton and Virginia Liburd attended an Elder's Wives conference over Labor Day weekend in Los Angeles entitled, Connecting and Bonding. The Theme was "Renewing Our Spirits" and Anne was the M.C. (Master of Ceremonies) for the event. | Sun., Aug. 31, 2008 | Message: Pastor Mark Cornerstone's Values ~ Part 3: LOVE We are moving through a new series about values. Week one covered what values are and we asked ourselves what we really value and we took time to see if how we live matches up with our stated values. Last week we rehearsed Cornerstone’s vision statement. A vision statement can encapsulate many of the values held by a group or an organization. Over the next few weeks we will take a closer look at the values that drive and motivate us and learn how those values are derived from seeing what God values. Or, perhaps better stated we will look at God’s values and learn how ours are to be birthed from them.
Let’s dive in head first into the most basic yet important value. It undergirds, informs and permeates any and all other values we could talk about. That value is love. It may sound cliché to say, “It’s all about love” or “All we need is love”, but it’s true nonetheless. God is love. Love is his character, his nature, his premise, and his promise. All he does flows from love. We were created out of his love and we are sustained by his love. We are the most valued of all his creation – because of love. I believe his greatest desire is for us to not only exist in a loving relationship with him, but also for us to live in loving relationships with each other. And the latter is only possible by way of the former.

We began a new sermon series last week on values by asking, “What am I all about?” There are many important things in life but what do we really value? How do we know what our values are and how can we tell we are living them out? This series seeks to bring us into a deep conversation and discovery about values. We’ll take a look at individual values, community (Cornerstone) values and, of course the most important of all, God’s values.
A suggested assignment was given last week that asked you to take a deep look at your values. Does your list of values match how you actually live? Did you look to see where you spend your time, energy, money; how you treat others; and did you explore your thought patterns and motivations? What does your life say your values are?
As individuals, it’s important to know what our values are. Your values - and how you live them out - say a lot about you. It is also important that as a community – called Cornerstone – we understand what we value. Values held by groups and organizations are often encapsulated in a vision statement. A vision statement guides, directs and motivates. It answers the question, “What are we all about?” This is our vision:
We envision Cornerstone Community Church being a movement of devoted Jesus followers using their time, talents, energies and resources to reach youth and their families by offering love, support and guidance in their spiritual growth and development.
This vision statement is derived from a convergence of 3 main factors: the congregation’s gifts & talents, the pastor’s passion and gifting and the community’s need. Our vision is a response to a deep need and a clear calling from God. Our vision is fueled by our values and our values are formed in relationship with Jesus.
Questions to mediate on this week: Am I on board with Cornerstone’s vision? Am I doing what I can to help fulfill and support the vision? Am I a participant or a spectator?
“Facing the Future” Budgeting Class - Part 6
Part 6 of the “Facing the Future: Budgeting Class" took place at 12:00 noon on Sat., Aug. 24th after the Worship Gathering.
| Sun., Aug. 17, 2008 | Worship: Cornerstone Band Message: Pastor Mark Cornerstone's Values Part 1 ~ "What We're All About" On Sun., Aug. 17th, Cornerstone started a new sermon series on Values. The sermon addressed questions such as: "What do you value?" "What are you all about?" "What makes you tick?" "Where do you invest yourself?" "What are values?" "What does God value?" Pastor Mark talked about "stated" values and "unspoken" values and challenged the congregation to some homework for this week: This week, consider what someone would say that you value if they saw you 'in action.' Take a little time this week and come up with a short list of your values, and then consider how each has or currently is shaping your life.
Really take time with God to consider what you value. Go deep. Be honest. Do the values on your list match how you actually live? Look at your life. Look at where you spend your time, energy, money; how you treat others; your thoughts and motivations. What does your life say your values are?
And perhaps the biggest challenge: How do your values align with God’s? Spend some time looking through the Gospels and identify what you would consider to be Jesus’ values.
